Most large operations should be hedged thru the first of the year on feed. If not they were staring a gift horse in the mouth. I sure would have been locking in feed the past few weeks with what was going on. Kind of like a normal year with a good rain on the first of July and corn is still $7 and you are waiting for $8.
I assume you were hedged out many years with $7+ corn and $15 beans......
Its easier to say in hindsight than to do in real time.....
Livestock is much more predictable than grain farming. I will never ever say easier. My yields have varied 100 bu in 3 years and acres by 655. Much harder to sell a crop to the "T" vs. hedging feed for a feedlot or finish operation. Shame on any end user that complains in the next 6-months. Maybe they should have been reading NAT?
