Subject: RE: Suckers on corn stalks?

De Forest, WI
Probably variety dependent. On sweet corn I see this all the time on 277A. Not so much on others. The year we plowed down the dutch white clover that was seeded between the strawberry rows ALL of the plants had suckers and nearly all filled to the tip. The ears were smaller, but fully edible and just as good tasting as the main ear. The extra nitrogen from the clover plow down most likely meant we wound up putting on close to 170N at a plant population of 20K/Acre.

I did not make that mistake again. The sucker ears took longer to get ready. My harvest crew has a tendency to run down the corn when they are picking. 277a is NOT uniform so it takes a good two weeks to harvest all the "NORMAL" ears. They extra week for the suckers and we could hardly walk down the rows.
