See if this satisfies you:

A new planter cannot do a better job than the planter I have.  Thus a well maintained planter trumps a new one as the cost to operate is less.



That's all well and good if the older equipment is available with the same capacity as the new. However, there are a lot of things now where the capacity of the new dwarfs that of the old. In those cases it isn't so universally true as you make it sound that the old one costs less to operate.
