Northwest Iowa
I have kicked around buying a semi several times in the past, but have
decided against it for now.
Many in my area are strictly grain farmers and we have several ethonol plants within 30 miles. Especially in the past few years with good grain prices, there are those who just enjoy driving and maybe (showing off) their rigs in line at the elevator.
My land is close in and I have decided to spend my money on storage and drying facilities. But then again those are not cheap either!
It seems in this part of Iowa that after the elevators have cleaned up their outside piles, they are quite willing to pick up on the farm for little or nothing in January and February just to get the bushels and to keep the trucks busy. I try to have my grain cart full when they get there so that I can have them loaded and on their way in just a few minutes. It works well for me because I don't tear up my yard when the ground is frozen and when they show up with two or three semis they can haul so much faster then I would be able to do.
Now if I was spread out over a large distance I might change my tune.
