If you rent a drum style sander remember, don't stop with the drum down. You will end up with a nasty groove.

+100. You can go from a floor that is cosmetically in poor condition but otherwise very salvageable to a floor that is basically ruined in the amount of time it takes to stop to blink a fleck of dust out of your eye. Orbital sanders are slower (especially for a floor like yours), but much more forgiving. Calling a pro would not be an outrageous option.

I think a floor of all shorts would look fine. A different look than long lengths, for sure, but just different, not bad.
