Subject: RE: Dropping the land line - Advice needed

I am surprised at all the people thinking the cell phone is the best
all round device. I would not consider is a reliable device in any
real disaster for the following reason.
1 it needs battery power that may or may not be charged.
2 it needs a communication tower that can be in the middle of nowhere.
3 it needs it be authorized from a master computer, except 911, as below
4 in this area 911 uses call centers, not local. if problem is between
you and call center you can't get 911.
5 if problem is between you and master computer you can't make a local call.

I bring you these points because it has happened three time in last xx years.
the big one was a land slide that killed 911 and all cells for a big area
in NE Saskatchewan. Local landline still works, but no long distance.

With all the talk about need for backup generators, you would think you would
also like a back-up communication system.

Just having a land line can also cause problems
