When we've used moldy bales for bedding, it seemed like the only person/critter it bothered was the guy that got to spread them out.
I think you're right on this... Although if they are real wet when baled up they might be froze tight by the time you get to use them in a few weeks if they stop fermenting/molding.. I don't think I'd want baby calves in with moldy bedding though...
