You can check the LSU Ag Center web site for the Macon Ridge Research Station at Winnsboro, LA. You can email or call the research agronomists at this station for more detailed information. Dr. Bob Hutchinson started this research project. I am not sure who is working on this project now.

I agree with the other posters about tillage helping to quickly break down organic matter. However, I don't think some of the posters realize how soil freezing in the winter helps build organic matter. Also, I don't think southern farmers realize how increasing soil organic matter will increase soil water holding capacity and help keep the crop going between rainfall events.
