Subject: RE: Building Organic Matter - Residue Mgt

Tenn Valley
We're a lot smarter now in how to manage our residues, especially corn. In my lifetime, I've seen corn yields go from 60 bu avarages to 180 - 200+ bu. This is a lot more residue. Vertical tillage helps get this residue into the ground. Vertical tillage equipment is so much different than our field disks. Regions are so different with soil types, OM breakdown, rainfall, and temperature ranges. I think we can use a disk in the Mid South - as fall tillage & before planting your cover crop. I believe that after the New Years fireworks celebration that growers should go put locks & chains on their field disks - and take them off after the 4th of July fireworks.
