Middlesex County, Ontario
Maintenance cost is the same. It costs twice as much to rebuild half as often.

The difference is purchase value and sale value.

If you want to think optimistically; used 12 rows are not at a premium now, and in the future they will be the new 6 row which are currently at a premium. So optimistically thinking the value will appreciate and your depreciation cost will be very little to none.

So you lose a little opportunity cost by carrying a little extra equity in iron. And upgrades are more expensive. Then again its easy enough to sell your experimental upgrades 12 rows at a time. Things like "lets buy soybean discs just in case we might need them someday" make you think twice because they cost double. If your one of those "I replace the chains every year just in case" people that costs extra.

If your tractor can pull it there's really no reason not to.
