Southwest Illinois | You don't have to justify it to anyone on here. Justify seems to be a fancy word interchanged commonly for "need" but it doesn't actually don't mean the same thing. I have a friend from college and they farm just a hair over 1000 acres of corn and beans and they went to a 24 row planter a few years ago. Initially I kind of laughed, but he has a full time job and he can get his corn planted in 2 days if he has someone to help or in 4 days if he does it by himself. I also had a relative who farmed 2000 acres and had an 8 row planter into the 90's. It really comes down to what can you pull and what is the best value to get your crop planted. What I see today in the used market is that the larger planters are not selling well at auction. A good 16/31 split row will make a good bean planter for someone so they have held in there well. But the 16-30's and 24/30's are taking a beating. I suspect the hottest planter on the market in terms of resale price is probably a 12 row with interplants. Obviously your planter tractor may place some limitations on how big you can go, but there are some deals on the larger planters a few years old so I would not get so focused on one size machine. | |
