Because with $4 fuel we will pay $26,666.67 for fuel in the first 100,000 miles with 15 mpg.. More than half the price of the truck. If the truck only gets 10 mpg, we'll pay out $40,000 in fuel per 100K miles. If we keep the truck 200,000 the cost of fuel will easily exceed the cost of the truck (if we paid cash, didn't have it on a 5 year 6% loan).

Excellent point Gerald. The trouble as I see it. It's always going to be that way. Unless everyone decides to buy pickups like The Pretender. I think we just have to pencil the numbers you gave into the equation and accept the fact that trucks are expensive to drive. I don't think we will ever see 1200 hp pickups that only use a gallon of fuel a week.
