Pickups can go places that big trucks can't get to or are banned from going and probably ride a lot better for all passengers which is a consideration on long trips. The tandems are a lot more bang for the buck, used semis are an even bigger bargain in my book. But they're made for a different market with different expectations regarding performance. Heavy truck operators won't put up with low quality products that fail prematurely, if they did they'd be out of business long before it was time to trade for a new truck.
