Northeast Louisiana

I agree with IL Cow Man about the strengths and weaknesses of the 86 series. I grew up on a 1486 and a 1086. We still own both but they just do light duty. Both had multiple transmission/rear end problems early in their lives, the 1086 once while under warranty. They have to be one of the most uncomfortable, rough riding, hard to shift tractors ever made. Our 1486 engine was good for about 4000 hours before cavitation took out a cylinder sleeve, even though we kept the coolant treatment filter changed regularly. Our 1086 engine has never been worked on, but it hasn't been worked as hard either. That was a good line about them selling a lot of 40 series Deeres in the day, I knew a lot of guys who had always been red who switched to JD because of unhappiness with the 86 series.

They were cheap on fuel though, especially compared to a JD of the day, and the engines pulled hard.  With all this said, for what you're wanting to do it would probably be fine.
