Subject: Re: John Deere 4630

Nc Ks.
Had a 4630 years ago. Wish I had it back. I had a 4440 at the time I bought the 4630 and the low rpm torque was awful. Complained to my local JD mechanic and he adjusted something on the pump and cured it. No, the 404 engine still wasn't what the 466 was, but you can improve that low end situation. Mine had noticeably more power than the 4440 and more weight meant for better pulling power. Radiator and seat was my biggest complaint. Had to keep the radiator clean and watch how hard you pulled it on a hot day. Mechanical seat wasn't near as good as the hydraulic in the 40,series. Would definitely prefer the quad-range to the 8-speed powershift on that model. Around here 4630's are about as cheap of tractor to buy as any of those models. I agree a 4640 would be a better choice but would cost another $6000-$8000, at least around here. Would stay away from a powershift even in the 40 series. Had one once in a 4430 and a 4840 and they are good transmissions, just not enough gears for tillage work or baling, swathing, etc.
