Martinsville, Ohio | Hickory Silt Loam is one of my favorites. I have gotten some of my best yields on it over the years. It's a good soil for an "older soil."

I realize most of you farm Wisconsin Glacial Till but a lot of us farm Illinoian Glacial Till where Hickory is found. It is near Avonburg and Rossmoyne soils in these parts.
I don't have much Brookston or Kokomo on the Wisonsin till, more Miami, Russell and related soils. That is the high dollar ground in Ohio with more Crosby, Fincastle in Western Ohio.
Some of my best farmer friends know nothing about soil types but are better farmers than I am so it's not an indication of success, it's just a point of knowledge I learned teaching Vocational Agriculture and County Agent work. I have showed them how to find their soil type on the Soil Web app on their smartphone or tablet and they think it's pretty cool. Others just ask you to come and walk over their land with one.
