Guymon, OK
Interesting thread. Our flat lands are generally Richfield-series soils, and our best ground is Richfield clay loam. It holds a lot of water, but can be a huge pain to plant. If it's wet in the spring (either from rain or irrigation) the top inch or so will dry out hard as a rock, but underneath it stays wet and sticky - makes it hard to get seed placed and covered well. Our poorer soils are usually of the Ulysses and Dalhart series. Ulysses silt loams can be very productive in a normal or wet year and are a joy to plant, but will dry out quickly. Our Dalhart soils are found on the sandy ridges that count for hills around here and consist of fine sand with just enough clay to glue it together.

We do have one oddball patch, maybe two or three acres, classed as a Lofton series. It's at the bottom of a draw that floods peridocally. It's very heavy and the sweeps pull hard through it if there's any moisture. In a wet year (wet for us, that is) that patch will produce wheat like it was irrigated, but in a drought it's almost worthless.

edit: I may have confused the Dalhart and Ulysses series, but I can't find my soil survey book to know for sure.
