SW Saskatchewan | Coyotes are an annoyance and some of them become downright dangerous, but it is difficult to wipe them out without a concentrated 1080 policy carried out over a number of years.
After heavy hunting because of a bounty program, a year later we have the same population as before.
Big danger if you shoot out your tame coyotes, a big bad guy with an attitude will move into your territory. If they aren't bothering you or your farm, best policy is to live with them if you can. If you can't, quick and selective culling will re-establish the balance.
The danger is that a different predator will move in- big cats, wolves will move in, and ravens and vultures will be alternate carrion eaters.
Last year the coyotes in our area trimmed the deer population- a bigger pest than the coyotes. And with the deer gone, the cats and the wolves find it easier to move on as well.
