Ea. Washington		Do you have decent working facilities to work your cattle in? Watched a father and son give up a ranch because everytime they worked cattle they would fight and the fight lasted until about a month before it was time to work them again. 10 months of fighting and about 2 months of relative peace a year. All they had was a large corral with the barn in the middle and would use a coupla trucks to make a wing to a barn door, then try to sort off calves as the herd came by around the barn. Damned shame as all they would have had to do was build a decient sorting alley with a few gates that worked and I think they would still be there. Actually tore the whole family apart including the grandkids for life. On the other hand some people are not able to work cattle no matter how hard they try. they have to learn to think like a cow and understand their flight zone etc. Can you find a friend or two who can do this and let dad go do something else. Might save the farm.

A good sorting alley 12 ft wide with two pens to the side and good swing gates and three people can sort a herd 3 ways in a few minutes A big pen or field is useless unless you can ride and rope and then it's a lot of work but some thinks it's fun. Spend a few bucks and make your familys life tolerable.
