South Central IL | While I agree with points made by others, I have done some research myself on this subject. What I feel people are missing is most of the truck cost is covered by the farm. If you have a 30k truck for the farm but want a 60k truck for farm and part time over the road work then the truck doesn't have to make so much. Obviously license, insurance, fuel etc will be higher but again the lower amount is covered by the farm.
My situation: I have 2-15k$ trucks, 2-12k$ small trailers with license 1100 each and insurance is ~500 annually. That is $54000 and costs of $3200 to use 2 months a year. I could upgrade to one $40k truck and $30k trailer from what I have found the license would be over $3k for commmercial license. Surely the insurance would be higher but my point is "how much does the truck really need to make?". Most likely I would not be paying a driver nor would I have the truck on the road all year.
