I'm guessing you have an external HD that you moved files to from your dying laptop. Is this the case? If so, what interface is the external drive? USB? If it is, I don't see why it would not connect to the newer machines. What I would be concerned with is if the external drive is formatted with FAT32 or something that may not work with Vista/Win7.

Knowing the interface would help.
