Best dryland corn we ever raised was on old plowed alfalfa ground. Just need good rain as old alfalfa usually has the moisture depleted pretty deep.
Do a soil test, Alfalfa also uses a lot of Phosphorus and you may be deficient on that, lime, and a few micros.
