You bring up a good point about competing with other lower cost ag commodity producers around the world. The "renewable diesel" market looks like just another made up BS market that depends on some other industry to buy it at an inflated price over regular diesel. In this case isn't it the airline industry that's looking for some excuse to say that they are doing their part to lower their carbon footprint rather than actually reducing the # of flights, etc. If the airline industry hits a rough patch and says we're not going to pay extra for renewable diesel then our market will disappear. That doesn't sound like a very dependable market to me. Maybe the oil companies will sell a lot of renewable diesel in California or export it to other countries with burdensome regulations like Europe, etc. But as we've seen with ethanol, those buyers can change their minds on a whim depending on where's the latest trendy place to buy from. I guess it can't hurt anything to develop more competition in the soybean crushing industry.
