It's hard to equip for a small herd. You do not have the ability to spread the expense for facilitys etc over a large enough base. A lot of times the difference between success and failure in cow calf is the handling and pre / post calving facilitys. Unless you will only calf on grass. Even then you need to be involved. I can't see that you would ever make enough to pay for the land they need to graze.
The money that you need to spend would be far better in another field of endevor... I wouldn't recommend the hog industry now either.
My wife reminds me that I could have a nice vacation for the family for what I lose each year in the cattle thing. I am a small producer... I'm trying to maintain 50 brood cows. That number has moved down from what it was ... and it will have to continue to drop. I am tired of working hard to lose money.
