Subject: RE: Opened cover crop for grazing - follow up

Driftless SW Wisconsin

Checking on the cow group pictured above in the cc mix this afternoon:

1) no obvious signs of distress.

2) about half the group was at the hay feeder

3) they all looked VERY full

4) the cows obviously prefer the turnips to the radishes. I could not find a turnip but many if not all radishes were either still in the ground or pulled and dropped. The winter rye was eaten down everywhere. Maybe they will eat radishes after the turnips and rye are gone, but for now almost no radishes consumed.

5) We had over an inch of rain last night and the area was muddy. I'm not going to open more of the strip for grazing for a couple days yet.

The cows not eating the radishes as aggressively as the turnips and rye may be a good thing.  They may end up grazing the whole strip but leaving the radishes to grow yet and break up the new and old compaction before the radishes winter kill.
