Hear what you are saying Chadlit. That wasn't the case with me but could have been similar to what you are saying because when I was in trouble and had to let part of it go my dad was disappointed that I had gotten in trouble and offered to cosign a note to save it. However I had friends/ cousins who Were dragging their parents down with them and I didn't want to be accused of that if it didn't work. When I was originally trying to buy the place my dad had offered to cosign and I had brushed it off so I didn't think it was right to bring him in later. As a side note I think one reason he wanted to cosign and save what I had to let go was because he didn't want our family name associated with "losing some land". Family pride is a big thing in some areas. I know that there were some deaths that were suspicious (that could easily have been suicides) around the area. Also, there had been a big push for family farms to incorporate for several years in the 70s. Many of those kinda blew up during the 80s because of the stress and did irreversible damage to the families themselves.
