| It wasn't much different 50 years ago when I bought my first new car for $1700 and it got 24 miles to the gallon on 27.9 cent a gallon gasoline except that it didn't run 100,000 mile with no major engine work. I don't know the cost of half a dozen engine rebuilds, but if I had a month to search I might be able to document them. 100,000 miles used 4,166.67 gallons of gas that cost $1,162.50 though I'm sure the price wasn't always 27.9 its first 100,000 miles. Point is that fuel cost is a healthy chunk of ownership cost of any vehicle and has been for a long time.
