Subject: Re: Side dressing 28% - pics

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I use our prototype Dawn 6000 with its 20" large single angled disk.  It over comes many of the problems of knives and injection.  Our FreeFarm injector is a lot lower cost and can get the fertilizer a couple inches down and covered but not as deep or consistent as the 6000. Here are some pictures from a couple years ago.

I side dress 6R30 with three units which works out well. I've never pulled anything with just three units on it but it works, low draft and half of the weight and cost of every row.

With it's 20" coulter it will go up to 6" deep with minimal disturbace and will seal and cut through about any residue.

In the pictures all I had was a 20 ft toolbar to use for side dressing but I planted 6R30 at 15 ft.

Side dressing is so important and so costly that I think it is worth putting to gether a side dress tool bar of some sorts and do the job right whether it rains or not.

Here are some pics of my side dressing 28% on strip tilled corn on corn a couple years ago. I put about 50 units N of a 28 +10-34-0 blend on with the Pluribus a day ahead of planting then about 75 units 28% on in this side dress operation on 60" centers.

These pictures are from 2010 with very old 6000 prototype units. The  current 6000 is very different and improved. it uses a floating shoe next to a 20" blade.  This is in some very heavy wet clay and really later (6/22) than I should have been side dressing.  I did run it in some sod also just to see if it would seal the slot. I could hardly tell where it had run.

One nice thing about side dressing 6R30 on 60" centers is that none of the three units is running in a tire track. This corn was a bit tall... I should have been in there earlier but the Pluribus 28/10-34-0 just ahead of planting kept it going.
