WCIN | I may have the opportunity to rent 80 ac in 14 fields. It is poor ground. Sandy, creek flooded, surrounded by trees, etc. I have been given the opportunity to bid on this 80 ac with an outside chance of another 200 ac in maybe 10 fields. I know from one of the previous tenants, the landowners son (farmed it for years but gave it up), that the best corn crop ever was 170 bu and that was with a good 60 that won't be included. My struggle is with trying to decide on seeding rates, fertilizer, and N and try and make a profit. The goal here is not bu/ac but $/ac. I was hoping to get some insight on what some of you guys are doing on poorly productive ground as far as rents and rates. I might mention as well that if I was farming 1000 acs of ground I wouldn't be looking at 280 in 20 some fields 15 miles from home. Instead I farm 150 ac 15 miles from home (in the complete opposite direction) and work full time with a partner on his 1400 acs. Young man just starting out livin the dream.... | |
