Subject: Scam stories

n.c.iowa
Was talking to a sister of mine yesterday, she works at a big box retailer, in the big city( well not really all that big, all things considered, but as big as they get in north Iowa).

Anyway she has worked at this store for all of her adult life, she has/is managed several depts. and she has a lot of stories.

So yesterday's topic was what scams are in the area. In addition our folks are getting Up there in their years, so we were educating dad also.

So the latest one as everybody knows is the "can you hear me now", phone scam, or another version, the caller asks who they are calling, so they can capture you saying your full name.

Anyway my sister told me about a couple that there have been running into quite abit recently( the store she works at has their own money wiring service). So the first is the old "you won a prize, but you have to send us money to pay the taxes, or shipping, etc.".

She had a lady come in Monday again just absolutely bananas about sending publishers clearing house $500 so she could claim her 2 million dollar prize, my sister refused to do it, lady called for the store manager, mad as a wet hen because they were standing in the way of her 2 million dollar prize, finally had to look up a number for the publishers clearing house prize center, called it, and there was a recording, " if you have won a prize from us, we don't ask you to pay anything to receive it".

Then in the same day a fellow wanted to wire some money to individual in Minneapolis, in the morning somebody had wired some money to the same number, and the person that does this relayed to my sister that it was kinda odd deal, the person that did this in the morning was in hurry because if the wired money didn't get there by a certain time,( they were buying a dog, expensive dog, cheap), the dog would be gone. My sister told the person doing the transfers it was a scam, so told her to write the contact info. Down, and if somebody else came in wanting to do this, to give her a call.

So sure enough a guy came in that afternoon wanted to wire money to the same contact info, so the attendant called my sister up to have a discussion with the gentleman.

So to say the least he wasn't buying it, the contact info had a phone number, my sister said at least call the individual up and tell them that there is a problem with the money transfer system, and that you have to come pick the dog up anyway, got cash will meet halfway, so he Texted the change of plans, that wasn't going to work," how about if I meet you at a address in Minneapolis?"
After alittle bit the person on the other end texted back, all out of dogs, sorry.... the hoped to be dog owner was livid, and just about had to be escorted out of the store.

My sister has alittle insight into this, for one of her boyfriends brothers ( the guy is 55 years old)had this happen to him, paid $500 for a $3000 dog, went to get said dog in Minneapolis, the address didn't even exist, this happened last summer, and to this day he doesn't admit he was scammed.

Just wonder if anybody else has got any interesting scam stories, for myself I've narrowly avoided at least one.
