Cedar Rapids, Iowa | Well CanBus can run up to 1 Meg if the bus is short enough. I think that's still relatively slow, and you still have the headache of packetization and reassembly of data.
There is a newer technology for automobile use called FlexRay which will run up to 20 Meg. That would probably be sufficient bandwidth for the foreseeable future, but I'm guessing the cost of the hardware is going to be relatively high due to low production numbers.
