South Central MN | It takes time for the soil to change too, I'm still using fertilizer and herbicides but did reduce what tillage I do, seeing a lot more medium sized worms this year then a few years back, so they must be happy.
Some fields have just done a single shallow fall tillage pass, then planted into that in the spring. Its firm on top, but the planter openers go in plenty easy. Less tracks being made in fluffed up dirt, less time bouncing around in a seat... Other fields have been no-tilled for a couple or more years in a row, although most could use one shallow fall pass to help smooth them out. The past few wet years didn't help things so there may be a few tracks you feel when you drive across some spots.
There is livestock on the farm, that helps things along to provided you are able to spread on all the fields. Some don't get much as they are further out so when pushed for time they never get any. | |
