Croswell, Michigan | I had a friend that had a similar situation. He does a lot of cover crops and apparently never got rid of the rye before planting wheat. He had the grain buyer come out and look at it and was told they would probably reject it. He went through with the combine and set the head just low enough to clip the rye heads. I think he did it 2-3 weeks before the wheat was ready to harvest. I’m sure he lost a lot of wheat from driving over it but he was successful in getting rid of the rye.
I had some rye in wheat on one farm last year. I had the fertilizer custom spread on that farm and it must have been in the bottom of their floater because you could see right where they started on the headland and it eventually thinned out. My first thought was hedge clippers but there was just too much. By the time we combined it and put it in the bin with wheat from other farms it was a non issue. Nonetheless I didn’t like looking at it. | |
