Know some people who had/have dementia.
Delusions, are things that you think happened, that didn't happen, or things you swear didn't happen, even though you were there.
Hallucinations, are seeing things that are not there.
It almost sounds like he's having both. Really unusual for it to come on that fast without an obvious cause that a scan wouldn't catch (usually something like tumor or fluid on brain which should have been caught).
