My Versatile used to do that. It was one of the steering cylinders twisting on the ball joint where it pins to the frame. The sound came from when it ran out of ball to twist on....."clunk".
Had all the bushings cut out and replaced (cause they were wore). Also put in new pins and rubber cushins. No more twisting or clunking.
