Northeast ND | Define "cold" weather? Lots of conveyor belts used in ND all winter. Usually run it empty for awhile to warm belt up. We also made a cover to keep snow and ice out of the hopper.
PROS: Quiet! Gentle on fragile seeds. Easy cleanout for IP crops, seed growers, etc. No extra hopper needed for intake end, doesn't hold water in bottom like an auger hopper does.
CONS: $$$$. Higher initial cost, and more maintenance as well. Don't let anybody tell you differently. You WILL eventually be replacing bearings, adjusting belt, fixing belt/lacing/tracking, etc. Our 1535 top drive conveyor with the extended "field loader" intake has 12 bearings. And they do fail eventually.
We use our 1535 a lot now, since it is faster than our 8" truck auger and can keep up to our newer bin unloads. However, I would like to get a 10" truck auger that could be used on a lot of the bins, saving wear and tear on the conveyor. My 2 cents. | |
