2-4 coats of white acrylic latex paint will keep it from snagging. That will be the quickest and easiest. Don't worry about it running onto the finished edge, scrape it off with a credit card after a couple hours or a day. If it's all horizontal, you might do it in one thick coat if you go back a couple times as it soaks in.
