Subject: finishing an exposed chipboard end????

Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa
We bought a value priced chipboard storage cabinet for wife's sewing room from the big box store. Have finished assembly except for hanging the doors on it. Wife noticed that top of the left and right sideboards are not "finished" but exposed chipboard. Granted, no one will see it, but she wants to throw fabric on top of the cabinet, and these "unfinished" ends are going to snag her fabric. I can see her point.

Attached is a poorly focused picture. Talking 5/8" wide by maybe 20-24 inches wide times 2 sides.

Any ideas of how to make those "exposed" tops of those sideboards snag-proof. Finished looks really don't matter.

Hoping to use the infamous triad of a fix which is "cheap, fast, and strong". Smear some caulk up there, paint it twice, some kind of spackle?

Thanks in advance. Bruce
