So would a guy rather have a paddle feeder then or are they too expensive?
I have a barn that started out with paddle feeders. Henway was the brand. Comparing a paddle to shelf feeder, the paddle is a little harder to adjust and harder for the pigs to learn to work the paddles. Another negative is that whole corn kernels won't pass through the mechanism in case you ever get any in your feed. The plus as you mentioned is that they don't clog up. The biggest reason I replaced them with shelf feeders is because after 15-20 years, the internal paddle mechanism, which was made of mild steel, got worn and needed replacement. The paddles themselves, which were also made out of mild steel, needed replacing about every 5-10 years. A shelf feeder has no moving parts so that maintenance is eliminated. |
