indiana | I won't disagree with what you say but it is not completely accurate. I think manure is some of the best fertilizer around but amazingly many of my neighbors don't. They might take it if it was given to them , maybe. Someone has to own land to build the buildings on and in the permitting process that manure has to have a place to go. Securing the acres to make it all work is the biggest hurdle for them. That's why they contract with a farmer. I think everyone knows there is always available labor , you either locate the cheap labor you want or pay up until you find someone willing to work.
I have contract fed hogs for over 20 years now. In my area the contract feeding model hasn't changed that much if any. None of the companies offering contracts here have run out , bought land , built building , provide all of the labor , and bypassed the local farmer completely. Could it happen ? Yes it could , but I haven't seen it yet. | |
