When you put a DVD into the drive can you hear it start spinning? If not my guess would be that the drive isn’t getting power and might have a loose connection. I recently took apart my old Toshiba laptop and the DVD drive is held in place by a tiny screw. I could see the screw possibly vibrating out of place and then the drive moving just enough to lose contact with its connectors.
