Hereford, TX | I like to pull my shanks up and only run 2-3 inches deep when I’m strip tilling corn stalks going to cotton. I used to strip till 8-10 inches deep, but it creates a huge air pocket in the soil and it’s takes too much irrigation to get the soil settled back down. I had problems with the cotton seed sinking where I ran deep. For cotton, I like to shallow strip till rig a month or so before I plant to clear corn residue out of the seed bed and to make a level uniform seed bed. Cotton has a great tap root, so I’m not too worried about compaction. | |
