| People on both sides had plenty to gain depending on how it turned out and how it was perceived.
I’m not going to speculate. I don’t trust either side and would not be surprised if it was either.

To clarify, when I voted both times for Trump, I viewed Trump as the slow train towards less individual liberty and more state authority. I viewed the Democrat opponent in both cases as the fast train. I feel no different today.
I view the political scale as authoritarian on the far left (fascists, full socialism, communism, etc) and anarchy on the far right and a well run republic about 2/3 of the way towards the right side.
Trump was left of where we need to be and heading further left. The Democrat party is further left from Trump and is heading left faster than Trump. For me he was just the lesser of two evils.
Politically I consider myself to be a classical liberal which is nothing like modern day liberal control freaks.
