We call that shovel a "coal shovel", or sometimes a "gravel shovel". That would be a last choice for digging clay based dirt.....here.

A true spade (shovel) would be the weapon of choice here for digging dirt. We have worn out several of them. Uncle even replaced the broken wood handle on one with steel pipe. We still have it. It has the square cut end vs the tapered type. I think it was meant as a tiling spade.
