Bremen, KS | The biggest part is to be sure your browser shows a lock icon in the address bar-both Firefox and Chromium/Chrome do this--which indicates you're using a secure link. Any time you enter sensitive information be sure the lock is there. A VPN would do no good if the last link between the VPN host and the end site is not secure, i.e. HTTPS protocol.
Despite advertising to the contrary, a VPN does not make everything safe as one insecure link has the potential to expose everything you do. Also, you're not "invisible" the IP headers are still visible--they have to be for your packets to get routed correctly--only the data packet payload is encrypted in such a way that it would take potentially years or too much computing power to break the encryption to make the effort worthwhile.
