Juneau, WI | I have seen significantly different biomass results from year to year and from different seeding practices and weather. In general I plan on termination when rye is between knee and waist high. Sometimes the rye may head out before waist high other times it may get 6-7 foot tall if not terminated earlier. Fall drilled rye tends to get much larger. Frost spread rye tends to head out much shorter, but I may decide to terminate it much later into the season. If we get our beans planted early we may let the rye grow with the beans for a long time. If we don’t get beans planted early I want to terminate earlier as rye tends to keep our ground wetter since it starts to wick up our generally high water table. | |
