coast of Maine
Blow some air back to the tank when you take off lines at pump, any restriction(old foil cap liners, twigs, dog hair, etc)will cause so much suction that it will suck air.Actually BIL had a kobelco excavator and fueled back in the day with cans, had a german shephard dog, found a wad of dog hair in the fuel line, actually caused same issue you have.Yes those ferrules made of rubber are a dumb design.I think vibration cracking line resistance was idea.
