I second the recommendation on the Avira anti-virus software. Been using it for years on our Dell / XP machine and it has never failed to catch the nasty stuff.
Best part about it - it's not a real commonly used title. Perhaps this would help since some of these newer viruses are being written to work around the more common titles.
