First thing is stick with it.

Mapshots is a good company.  So is Farmworks.  But the problem you will find with about any of them is your statement "I want to spend more time in the field than in front of the computer cussing it."  This is the kind of thing that will bring your frustration to a new level.  I'd look at Mapshots some more and give the Farmworks people a call.  Tell them what you want to accomplish and what you have to work with.

Whoever you go with them buy some phone support and then use it.
