Boyd, WI | Steel wheels are on farms operated and occupied by Mennonites. Certain sects of the Mennonite community prohibit operation of any self-propelled vehicle on rubber wheels. Their implements will all have rubber on them, just not the powered unit. The autos you see may have been those of others that drive the Mennonites around. Some sects closer to Thorp and east of there permit driving auto's and rubber wheels as well, just depends on the church and their rules. I do custom work for numerous Mennonites around the Stanley and Boyd areas that are all on steel wheels. Many of them feel that it will change and someday they'll be permitted to use rubber. Also, as long as they don't own the unit, it can have rubber and they can drive it, such as helping out a neighbor using the neighbor's equipment. They also don't use television and radio, but do have and use many other conveniences including telephone and some computers for recordkeeping and farming. | |
